Dead Rising 4 is an action-adventure video game developed by Capcom Vancouver and published by Microsoft Studios for Xbox One. It is the fourth installment in the Dead Rising series. Ten years ago, Capcom released the original Dead Rising on the Xbox 360. With a madcap tone, a huge number of zombies, and a surprising amount of variety, it was impressive at the time. Since then, the Capcom Vancouver (née Blue Castle Games) team has been cranking out new Dead Rising games every few years, and sanding off the rough edges of the franchise as they go. But as it turns out, a decade of refinement still isn’t quite enough time to perfect the formula.
On our sister site IGN, the game received a “Great” rating of 8.1/10. The overall plot and the moment-to-moment gameplay are commended throughout the review, but IGN’s Brandin Tyrrel was disappointed by the lack of a co-op story mode, instability in the separate multiplayer mode, and a messy visual presentation all around.
With 36 reviews aggregated in Metacritic, the Xbox One version is sitting at 76/100. There are a few out-and-out negative reviews in the mix, but the vast majority of outlets score the game somewhere between 70 and 90. Sadly, the Windows 10 version of Dead Rising 4 hasn’t been widely reviewed yet, so we’re still waiting to see how well it performs.
The Digital Foundry team put the game through a stress test on the Xbox One, and ended up with middling results. The frame rate ranges between 27 and 30 fps, the resolution is capped at 900p, and the extra power in the Xbox One S doesn’t really make much of a difference. All things considered, this game definitely isn’t a looker.
On the upside, it performs much better than the sloppy Xbox One release of Dead Rising 3. As an Xbox One launch title, the 720p resolution and frequent frame rate dips to the low 20s were just plain ugly. From a technical perspective, the fourth game is superior in nearly every way.
Dead Rising 3 saw a PC release in 2014, and it was far from perfect. The overall visual quality was better than the Xbox One original, but the default 30fps cap was a major disappointment. We haven’t seen much of the Windows version of Dead Rising 4, but we’re not getting our hopes up. If we see any major PC-only issues, we’ll be sure to check back.
The latest installment is getting a simultaneous release on the Windows 10 store, so PC gamers won’t have to wait. However, Microsoft did lock up timed exclusivity, so you’ll need to wait at least three months before there’s any hope of a Steam release. And if you’re hoping to play the game on your shiny new PS4 Pro, you’ll need to wait a year or so before that’s a possibility.
